HERRING SPAWN
HERRING SPAWN
The herring fishery in Sitka, Alaska, is an annual spectacle, as boats gather each spring to harvest the vast schools of Pacific herring that migrate to coast to spawn. As a keystone species, herring feed on plankton and transfer energy up the food chain, feeding whales, sea lions, and seabirds.
